The Antlers Fire Department has been working on Sirens since June of 2008, even though the new sirens are state of the art, there have been several technical problems with the sirens activating at the wrong time.
The sirens are radio controlled, similar to the way we dispatch the Volunteer Fire Departments and Antlers Fire/EMS when fire calls and ambulance runs are reported, therefore on four occasions the sirens have sounded accidentally when a fire call has been paged out.
We have been working extremely hard to eliminate this from happening, we have conducted several test on the system every week. Last week we were able to replace some electronics inside the control box and we also changed the radio frequency, this moves the sirens off of the Fire and EMS paging system.
The Antlers Fire Department sincerely apologizes to the public for all of the accidental Siren Sounding and hope the troubles have ended.
We will be testing the Tornado Sirens every Friday at 12:00 noon except for when it is bad weather.
Another tool available to the public is the radio frequency the storm spotters are using during a storm. The Radio Frequency for your scanner is 158.7825. If your scanner is an older scanner that will not accept the entire frequency, you can put in 158.780, this will be close enough to hear the storm spotters activity. The storm spotters headquarters or Emergency Operations Center (EOC) telephone number is the Fire Department, 580-298-0288. The public is welcome to call the EOC during bad weather for information.
